REAL BETIS 0-2 BARCELONA: RAKITIC & SUAREZ SCORES

Image
Ivan Rakitic  and the in-form  Luis Suarez were on target as  Barcelona  moved to within two wins of retaining the Liga title with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over 10-man  Real Betis . For the second weekend running, Real and Atletico Madrid played before Barca and respective wins over Real Sociedad and Rayo Vallecano turned up the heat on the champions. Luis Enrique's men initially struggled to muster a response as Barca failed to display their usual fluent, attacking style of football at the Benito Villamarin. However, Heiko Westermann's dismissal for a second yellow card 10 minutes before the break threatened to undo Betis' hard work in the opening period and Barca subsequently broke through five minutes after the break.  Rakitic had been regularly booed due to his previous association with Betis' fierce rivals Sevilla, but he had the last laugh by tapping in after costly miscommunication between German Pezzella and goalkeeper Antonio Adan. And Suarez, who had sco

At Madrid 1-0 Rayo Vallecano, Griezmann to the rescue

Image
The Frenchman scored a mere 34 seconds after his introduction from the bench, as the hosts moved to the top of La Liga prior to Barcelona's clash with Real Betis Antoine Griezmann  came off the bench to give  Atletico Madrid  a narrow 1-0 victory over  Rayo Vallecano  in La Liga on Saturday. Real had beaten Real Sociedad 1-0 earlier on Saturday, but Atletico remain a point ahead of their local rivals after the Frenchman's decisive strike. Manager Diego Simeone was absent from the touchline after receiving a ban for his part in the throwing of a ball to disrupt a Malaga attack last weekend, and seven changes from their midweek Champions League win over Bayern Munich resulted in a disorganised first-half showing. But Griezmann needed just 34 seconds after coming on as a substitute to settle the game, registering his 21st league goal of the season - five of which have come in 1-0 wins. Attention will now turn to Tuesday's semi-final second leg in Munich as Atletico look t

REAL SOCIEDAD 0-1 REAL MADRID, BALE AT THERE RESCUE

Image
The Wales international scored late in the second half to keep his side's hopes of winning La Liga alive in a closely-fought affair at the Anoeta Stadium on Saturday Gareth Bale stepped up the plate to score a late header as a depleted Real Madrid downed Real Sociedad 1-0 to keep their hopes of winning La Liga intact. Los Blancos were without star duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema at the Anoeta Stadium and needed a moment of inspiration to put pressure on title rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid ahead of their next league fixtures. And Bale answered the call as he leapt above the Sociedad defence to bullet a header into the top corner to earn Real a huge three points.  Real have momentarily moved to the top of the table thanks to Bale's strike ahead of Atletico and Barcelona's games against Rayo Vallecano and Real Betis respectively on Saturday.

REAL MADRID TO SELL JAMES RODRIGUEZ

Image
JAMES RODRIGUEZ is set to leave Real Madrid this summer with agent Jorge Mendes already looking for his next club, according to Guillem Balague. The Colombia international has been a shadow of his former self this season, failing to nail down a place in either Rafa Benitez or Zinedine Zidane’s starting XI. Rodriguez was a key man the previous year after completing a whopping £63million move from Monaco, but has been gradually frozen out as Los Blancos look to employ more pragmatic tactics. Rodriguez's time at Real starting going downhill when he was dropped by Rafa Benitez Getty The playmaker’s mum has already made her feelings known about Zidane  on Twitter, with Rodriguez’s dad  also getting in on the action . Real are believed to be in the market for  Chelsea’s  Eden Hazard as they look to peg back Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the title race, and Rodriguez could be used as a bargaining chip . Manchester United  have also been linked, but will have to splash the cash as

PSG 4-0 RENNES, EQUAL LIGUE 1 POINTS RECORD

Image
The French champions cruised to victory at Parc des Princes with Maxwell and Edinson Cavani also on target in a dominant display against an out-of-form visiting side Champions Paris Saint-Germain equalled their own Ligue 1 points record with an emphatic 4-0 home victory over Rennes on Friday. Laurent Blanc's side have now matched their record 2013-14 tally of 89 points and still have three more league matches remaining as they attempt to beat the mark before looking to seal back-to-back domestic trebles in the Coupe de France final against Marseille. Hosts PSG – who made five changes following their win over Lille in the Coupe de la Ligue final - scored twice in the space of four second-half minutes, with Maxwell impressively rounding off a wonderful move before Zlatan Ibrahimovic struck from close range. Edinson Cavani then hit the crossbar before Ibrahimovic got his second of the match with a powerful finish 12 minutes from time. It was all one-way traffic as Cavani lashed h

NO NEYMAR, THIAGO SILVA, MARCELO OR DAVID LUIZ IN BRAZIL’S COPA AMERICAN SQUO

Image
There were some surprises in Dunga's initial list ahead of this year's tournament, with a number of young players left hoping to make an impression at the expense of bigger names Neymar ’s absence from this year’s Copa America Centernatio was made official on Friday when the  Barcelona  star was left out of  Brazil ’s 40-man preliminary squad for the competition. Real Madrid’s Marcelo and Paris Saint-Germain duo Thiago Silva and David Luiz also failed to make coach Dunga’s list, which will be whittled down to a final squad of 23 players on May 5. Selecao captain Neymar had been embroiled in a club vs country row for a number of months prior to the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) and Barcelona reaching an agreement that will see him play in August's Rio Olympics but sit out of June’s Copa America in the USA. Thiago Silva’s continued absence from the Brazil squad has been a bone of contention in the local media but his omission comes as no surprise, with the PSG star

GUARDIOLA: YOU CAN KILL ME IF ATLETICO KNOCK BAYERN OUT!

Image
The Spaniard insists his side's semi-final is not over yet and is confident the Bundesliga champions can overhaul Diego Simeone's men in the return leg on Tuesday Bayern Munich  boss  Pep Guardiola  has not given up hope of making it to the Champions League final despite losing the first leg of their semi-final 1-0 at Atletico Madrid . A single Saul Niguez strike was enough to give Diego Simeone’s side victory at Vicente Calderon meaning the German champions face a tough test in the return at Allianz Arena. However, Guardiola is confident his team can overhaul Atleti and also explained his decision to start the game without Thomas Muller. "The reason was purely tactical. I just wanted to play with one striker,” he told reporters. "My experience of playing with two centre-forwards is not good. I wanted more control, but I love playing with Thomas Muller. "In Lisbon, Robert Lewandowski sat out but we won. Then it was not an issue. "In the end, I have to

Villarreal 1-0 Liverpool and Donetsk 2-2 sevilla

Image
Villarreal's Adrian Lopez snatched a stoppage-time winner at home to Liverpool to move them closer to a first European final after the first leg of their Europa League last four clash finished 1-0 on Thursday. Liverpool, who got a taste of their own medicine having scored deep in added time to knock out Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals, looked comfortable before Denis Suarez broke into the box and unselfishly squared for Lopez to sweep home. In the other semifinal, holders Sevilla had their fingers briefly loosened from the trophy before grabbing a 2-2 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk that left them well-placed to progress. Sevilla's bid to become the first side to lift the trophy three years running got off to a great start when they opened the scoring through Vitolo after six minutes. Shakhtar produced a spirited response, though, with goals from Marlos and Taras Stepanenko to lead at halftime before Kevin Gameiro's 82nd-minute penalty left the Spaniards favourites to p

CHELSEA AGREE DEAL FOR ROMA MIDFIELDER NAINGGOLAN

Chelsea have agreed a deal to bring Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan to Stamford Bridge this summer. The Blues will pay £28 million for the Belgium international, with the player set to sign a five-year deal with the Premier League champions. He will become Antonio Conte's first signing after the Italy boss agreed a deal to replace Guus Hiddink after Euro 2016. Chelsea's deal for the box-to-box midfielder has been thrashed out over the last 48 hours with Roma and the player's representatives.  Roma's director of sport Walter Sabatini was spotted outside Stamford Bridge on the 7th April and set up a meeting with Chelsea's transfer bosses and it was understood that the Belgian midfielder was Conte's number one target to strengthen his midfield.

At Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich, Saul scores

Image
A SCORCHER from Saul Niguez sealed a vital 1-0 win for Atletico Madrid in their Champions League semi-final first-leg against Bayern Munich. The Spanish midfielder dribbled through three opposition players before tucking the ball into the far corner past Manuel Neuer after 11 minutes, earning Diego Simeone’s men a slender advantage ahead of next week’s return leg. David Alaba was denied an equaliser in the second-half when his fierce shot hit the woodwork, while Fernando Torres also struck the woodwork despite being clear on goal late on in the game. Here are five things we learnt at the Vicente Calderon: 1 Atletico's bid for unlikely Champions League glory remains on. And their fearless style of play has made them become many neutrals' choice. The new Leicester? 2 Saul Niguez is one to watch for the future. The 21-year-old Spaniard's sensational strike brought this game to life and suggested that big things could follow from him. 3 Mark Clattenburg could be Engl

City became only the third side to stop the 10-time European champions from scoring in this season's competition in a captivating tie, but had Joe Hart to thank for a string of late saves. Madrid – who were without Cristiano Ronaldo due to a thigh problem – will rue the lack of an away goal, but now have the opportunity to take control of the tie at home, while City will hope to net a crucial away goal in the Spanish capital. A cagey opening 45 minutes saw both sides struggle to create chances of note, City slightly edging proceedings while Karim Benzema wasted a late half chance. Aguero vs Sergio Ramos And Other Key Battles That Will Decide Manchester City’s Clash vs Real Madrid

Well, no one would have thought that, but Manchester City are in the Semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League and their next hurdle will be the Los Blancos. Real Madrid marginally defeated Wolfsburg in their last Champions League tie and will be looking forward to grab their 11 th  Champions League trophy. Manchester City, on the other hand, will be playing their first ever Champions League Semi-finals and the players will have to give their maximum to reach the finals to give Manuel Pellegrini his farewell gift. Manchester City are performing really well with Kevin De Bruyne on their side and they looked confident at times. De Bruyne was rested in City’s last fixture in which they trounced Stoke City by 4 goals to nil. If Pellegrini tends to beat Real Madrid, he needs to keep this Dutchman fit. Alongside De Bruyne, Aguero will always be a threat if he is allowed too much space in the box. That’s what Real has been doing in the Champions League this season; they take the risk of lea

Iheanacho, its a dream come true to share the pitch with Ronaldo

Image
The Manchester City striker is relishing the opportunity to play against the Spanish giants - and Cristiano Ronaldo in particular - in Tuesday's Champions League semi-final Manchester City  youngster  Kelechi Iheanacho  says it would be a dream come true to play against  Real Madrid  on Tuesday. Iheanacho scored twice and won a penalty to be named man of the match as the Citizens beat Stoke City on Saturday, their final game before taking on Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg on Tuesday. The 19-year-old is likely to start the game against Los Blancos on the bench, having made just two separate one-minute cameos in the knockout stages so far, but was noticably excited at the thought of sharing a pitch with Cristiano Ronaldo & Co. "I think I should dream about that because it's a great team to dream about," he said, with a broad smile across his face. "It would be a dream come true to play against them. Champions League qualification is more important than FA cup win- Van Gaal

Manchester United can reach a Wembley final with victory against Everton on Saturday, but the club's Dutch boss prioritises European football as their number one aim Manchester United  manager  Louis van Gaal  feels winning the FA Cup would represent a successful season, but said Champions League qualification is more important . Van Gaal's men take on Everton in a cup semi-final on Saturday but are fifth in the Premier League, two points adrift of rivals Manchester City in the race for Champions League football. The Dutchman, however, said a trophy represents a successful campaign, although he knows the importance of a top-four finish. "I think it is always a success when you win the title," Van Gaal said. "For the club it is more important, I have said that already a lot of times, to qualify for the Champions League, because we have to show ourselves at the highest level. And that was also our aim. "I think always when you win a title it brings again

Liverpool omits Sakho after he failed drug test

Image
The Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho is under investigation by Uefa for failing a drugs test after the Europa League tie  at Manchester United last month  and could face a six-month suspension. A sample submitted by the France international following the second leg at Old Trafford on 17 March was found to contravene Uefa rules. The £19m defender was told on Friday that he had failed the test and the  Liverpool  hierarchy, including Jürgen Klopp, decided he would not be considered for selection until further notice and will not feature in Thursday’s Europa League semi-final. Reports in France have claimed the test discovered a fat-burning substance. Sakho’s Liverpool team-mate Kolo Touré tested positive for diet pills while at Manchester City in 2011 and was handed a  six-month suspension  by the Football Association. The in-form Sakho could face a similar punishment if found to have taken substances banned by Uefa and such a suspension for the France defender would rule him out of E

Ángel Di María slotted home the winner as  Paris Saint-Germain  beat Lille 2-1 to capture the French League Cup trophy for the third year in succession, and for a record sixth time, on Saturday. The Argentina winger latched on to a poor clearance by Adama Soumaoro in the final at the Stade de France and rounded goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama to score despite Marko Basa’s lunging effort to try and cut out his 74th-minute shot. PSG, who have already  retained the Ligue 1 title , were reduced to 10 men three minutes earlier when midfielder Adrien Rabiot received a second yellow card for a foul on Lille playmaker Soufiane Boufal. Javier Pastore had put PSG ahead with a disputed goal late in the first half, volleying home a punched clearance from Enyeama with Layvin Kurzawa in an apparent offside position in the goalkeeper’s line of vision. Lille , playing in their first final, equalised five minutes into the second half when left-back Djibril Sidibé hit a free-kick from 22 metres through t

Pablo Zabaleta is a cult hero to the Manchester City  faithful and unsung in the wider football consciousness. Yet the way he zoomed along the right then selflessly created the third goal for Kelechi Iheanacho was a moment worthy of marking his 300th appearance for the club. The Nigerian’s 10th of a breakthrough campaign allowed his team to cruise home, and Iheanacho scored a second towards the end after the substitute Wilfried Bony played him in. On Tuesday Real Madrid are at this stadium for the Champions League semi-final first leg and this was ideal preparation. The win lifted Manuel Pellegrini’s men up to third place on 64 points with three matches remaining, though Arsenal can leapfrog them if they win at Sunderland on Sunday. Pellegrini said: “It was very important to have our mind focused on this game and not on Tuesday. I always say a big team must be able to have their minds in both competitions.” In the buildup Pellegrini said Vincent Kompany had suffered no reaction fol

Man u complete signing of Lee O'Connor

The 15-year-old defender, who plays for Republic of Ireland's age-group sides, has passed medical tests and will join  United  in the summer. O’Connor learnt his trade at Waterford, an Irish side in the Munster province. He captains his country’s Under-16s and was last month named Ireland’s Under-15 player of the year. The full-back has been likened to countryman John O'Shea, who also made his name at Waterford. United are committed to signing the best young talent - both for the first team and their academy. They are wary of falling behind  Manchester City , who have lured a host of top youth players to the Etihad, and are actively recruiting. Former United hero Nicky Butt is heading up the academy and he’s adamant the youth set-up is not in chaos. He said: “It is not in a mess. BARCELONA have released a sneak peek at what the new Camp Nou will look like once its expansion is complete. The Catalan club posted on their official Twitter page a short video showing off the 105,000-seater stadium they plan to build. The new design will have amazing tiered balconies for fans to walk on Twitter: FCBarcelona Barca stars Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique all feature, and the outline for the La Liga giants’ impressive trophy room is also captured. The Premier League's top two teams supplied eight players to the star XI, with one offering each from West Ham, Arsenal and Manchester United Leicester City  and  Tottenham  have four representatives each in the PFA Team of the Year, with Arsenal star  Mesut Ozil  left out of the Premier League's best XI for 2015-16. The German playmaker misses out on the team despite racking up 18 assists, with Tottenham starlet Dele Alli preferred in central midfield alongside Leicester's N'Golo Kante. For the third time in his Manchester United career, David de Gea gets the nod as the division's top goalkeeper on the back of another impressive season. Arsenal starlet Hector Bellerin has continued to shine and takes the spot on the right side of the defence, while England left-back Danny Rose wins the honour on the opposite flank. Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld has arguably become the division's stand-out centre-back under manager Mauricio Pochettino and lines up along

Suarez breaks Ronaldo's goal record for Barcelona

Image
The Uruguayan is now on 49 goals for the season, while the legendary Brazilian struck 47 times in all competitions in the 1996-97 campaign Luis Suarez  has overtaken Ronaldo by reaching 49 goals for the season in Barcelona’s  8-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruna. The Uruguayan scored four and assisted three as Barcelona recovered from their recent run of three straight defeats. Suarez set a new La Liga record by becoming the first player to have a hand in seven goals in a single game, and the former Liverpool striker has also now surpassed one of Barca’s greats. Ronaldo scored 47 goals in all competitions for Barca during the 1996-97 campaign but Suarez now stands on 49 goals in the current season - and he still has five games to go. Suarez still has some way to go to overtake Lionel Messi, who holds the record for Barcelona after scoring 73 goals in the 2011–12 season.

DREAM DUO Harry Kane and Dele Alli kept Tottenham's title dreams alive as they brushed aside Stoke at the Britannia. Barcelona lacking a captain like Puyol- Capello

The ex-England manager feels the lack of a true leader in the dressing room could cost the Catalans as their struggles continued on Sunday with another loss Former  Real Madrid  coach Fabio Capello believes  Barcelona's  recent struggles are partially down to the absence of a charismatic leader like Carles Puyol, who hung up his boots in 2014. The Catalans are on a four-game winless streak in La Liga following Sunday's 2-1 defeat against Valencia and are in serious danger of missing out on the domestic title following their poor run, while they also crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid. And Capello - who was coach of the Madrid team that pipped Barcelona to the title in 2006-07 after an impressive comeback - feels the lack of a true leader could cost the Camp Nou side. "This time, the comeback has happened really quickly. Barca have lost a lot of points and are now in great difficulty. When we did it, we went step by step, quietly, right

The 28-year-old scored his first goal for Barca back in May 2005 against Albacete as a 17-year-old, while his first strike for the national team came a little under a year later in March 2006 during a 3-2 friendly defeat to Croatia. With his 450 goals for Barca, Messi is way out in front as the club's all-time leading scorer, while his 50 for Argentina puts him in second place in the list of the national team's highest ever scorers, six beh
