REAL SOCIEDAD 0-1 REAL MADRID, BALE AT THERE RESCUE

The Wales international scored late in the second half to keep his side's hopes of winning La Liga alive in a closely-fought affair at the Anoeta Stadium on Saturday

Gareth Bale stepped up the plate to score a late header as a depleted Real Madrid downed Real Sociedad 1-0 to keep their hopes of winning La Liga intact.

Los Blancos were without star duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema at the Anoeta Stadium and needed a moment of inspiration to put pressure on title rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid ahead of their next league fixtures.

And Bale answered the call as he leapt above the Sociedad defence to bullet a header into the top corner to earn Real a huge three points. 

Real have momentarily moved to the top of the table thanks to Bale's strike ahead of Atletico and Barcelona's games against Rayo Vallecano and Real Betis respectively on Saturday.

Zidane praise Ronaldo for his display against Bilbao

The French coach moved the Portuguese attacker from the centre to the flank for Saturday's match against Athletic and feels the change worked well as they went on to win 4-2. Zinedine Zidane feels Cristiano Ronaldo proved his worth on the wing as he scored twice in 10-man Real Madrid's 4-2 win over Athletic on Saturday. Ronaldo's double helped Madrid negotiate a difficult test against Athletic at the Santiago Bernabeu, which saw the visitors cancel out his early opener through Javier Eraso before Aritz Aduriz rattled the crossbar.
